From Empty Corner to a Dedicated Bee Sanctuary
The Bee House
At the bottom of my garden, something special is taking shape. What started as a rough idea sketched in my head has turned into a full bee house project, built board by board, bracket by bracket, with plenty of problem-solving along the way. Clearing the old space, raising the frame, insulating the walls, and fitting each panel has been equal parts challenge and joy. Every step has made the space feel more alive, and the transformation from a messy patch of ground to a proper, purpose-built hive house has been incredibly satisfying.
Seeing it come together has sparked a whole new excitement for beekeeping itself. I’ve learned more than I expected, improvised more than I planned, and found myself genuinely enjoying the process – even the long days covered in sawdust and insulation foam. What you see here is the story of that build, from the early chaos to the clean, organised hive setup it’s becoming. If you’d like to follow the journey, and watch The Hive continue to grow, you can explore it all here.
Making Local Honey
For The Bees
Giving the bees a safe, sheltered place to thrive, grow strong colonies, and stay protected throughout the seasons.
For Nature
Healthy bees support the entire local ecosystem, pollinating plants, flowers, and gardens far beyond the hive itself.
For Everyone
And once the bees have done their work, we get to share their incredible honey with friends, neighbours, and anyone who loves something truly local.
Beekeeping – an Apiarists Journey
Learning the Craft
Beekeeping started as curiosity but quickly turned into a proper passion, guided by hours spent watching, reading, and listening to experienced keepers. Every hive check brings something new to learn, and every challenge becomes part of the ongoing adventure.
Grandad’s Influence
My love for nature comes from her grandad, who always had a quiet respect for the outdoors. Building the bee house and tending the hives feels like carrying a piece of that legacy forward, honouring the lessons he quietly passed down.
Guided by a Mentor
Much of the confidence she has now comes from Rob, her mentor, who shared decades of experience, practical tips, and the kind of advice you only learn by being stung a few times. His support has shaped my approach and helped her understand the bees on a deeper level.
The Smoker & the Ritual
There’s something calming about preparing the smoker, opening the hive, and moving slowly with purpose. It’s become a small ritual – a moment to breathe, focus, and step into the bees’ world with care and respect.
Caring for the Colony
From checking brood patterns to monitoring food stores and watching for signs of disease, caring for the colony is equal parts responsibility and reward. Seeing the bees flourish is a reminder that small, consistent actions make a real difference.
Harvesting with Gratitude
The honey harvest is always the highlight – not because of the jars lined up at the end, but because it represents months of hard work from thousands of bees. Every spoonful is shared with appreciation and a promise to keep giving the bees a good home.
